Rheumatoid Arthritis

Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints. Unlike osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear, rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by the immune system mistakenly attacking the lining of the membranes that surround the joints, leading to inflammation, pain, and joint damage. Rheumatoid arthritis tends to be more common in women than in men.

There are a variety of risk factors that can cause rheumatoid arthritis including: environmental factors, smoking, hormonal changes, and even genetic predisposition, meaning you are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis if a close relative has been affected by it as well.

Recognizing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis is crucial for early intervention. Common symptoms include:

  • Joint pain and stiffness, often symmetrical
  • Swelling and warmth in affected joints
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Morning stiffness that lasts for hours
  • Decreased range of motion
  • fever or weight loss

Rheumatoid arthritis is a complex autoimmune condition that requires comprehensive management and a supportive network. If you are newly diagnosed or wanting to seek better ways to manage your symptoms, contact our office today.
